Why Coastal Roofs Wear Faster
Property in and around Ayr takes noticeably more punishment than property a few miles inland, and it shows in the roofs.
Wind coming in off the Firth of Clyde arrives with nothing to slow it down. Slates lift, ridge tiles work loose, and flashings that would sit undisturbed for decades inland get worked at continuously. Add salt carried in the air, which accelerates corrosion in nails, fixings and metalwork, and driving rain that finds gaps a lighter shower would never reach, and a roof on an exposed Ayr property is doing considerably more work than the same roof would do in Cumnock.

Older and Period Property

Around six miles south. Cumnock is largest town in this part of Ayrshire and its housing runs from Victorian sandstone in town centre through to substantial interwar and post-war estates — much of it originally roughcast or dry dashed, and much of it now due attention.

Around ten miles north. The largest town in East Ayrshire, with everything from Victorian tenements and sandstone terraces to large suburban estates. We cover both trades across the town and surrounding villages.
The Irvine Valley — Galston, Newmilns and Darvel
The three Irvine Valley towns sit north-east of Kilmarnock along the A71. Largely Victorian terraced and sandstone property built through the lace and weaving years, in a valley setting that funnels weather along it.
Auchinleck
Around four miles away, between Catrine and Cumnock. Auchinleck has a large stock of terraced and semi-detached housing from its mining years, which brings its own considerations — shared roofs, party walls and exposed gables.

Yes. We are based in Catrine, around thirteen miles east, and Ayr is a regular working area. There is no additional travel charge.
Q: Does a coastal roof need different materials?
The principles are the same but the specification matters more. Fixings and metalwork face accelerated corrosion from salt in the air, and wind exposure puts more demand on detailing and underlay. We specify accordingly rather than using the same build-up we would inland.
Q. My slates keep lifting in high winds. Why?
Usually either nail fatigue — where the original fixings have corroded to the point where they no longer hold — or inadequate fixing at exposed edges and verges. If it is happening repeatedly it is worth a proper assessment rather than repeated individual repairs.
