Reynolds Roofing & Roughcasting are family-run roughcasters covering Ayr and the surrounding coast. We carry out wet dash harling, dry dash and pebbledash, silicone and smooth rendering and roughcast repairs.
Roughcasting is one of our two core trades, and coastal work is a regular part of it. We do not subcontract, and the team that quotes your job is the team that carries it out.
See all our roughcasting services across Ayrshire. If the roof is taking the same punishment, our roofers in Ayr can quote for both.
Render and roughcast on the coast work considerably harder than they do inland, and they fail sooner if the specification is not right for the exposure.
Driving rain arriving off the Firth hits west-facing elevations almost horizontally, which finds any weakness in a finish that a vertical shower would run straight past. Salt carried in the wind accelerates deterioration. Wind-driven moisture penetrates hairline cracks that would be harmless further inland. And on exposed elevations the wall rarely gets long enough between soakings to dry out properly.
The result is that west and south-west facing walls in Ayr routinely need attention long before the other elevations of the same property.

traditional wet dash with a hard-wearing, weatherproof finish. The right match for most of Ayr’s older estates.
silicone and smooth render for a clean, low-maintenance finish.
just the exposed wall that has failed, renewed and matched to the rest of the house.
There is no single answer, but exposure should decide it more than appearance.
On a sheltered elevation, a properly applied traditional wet dash will do the job for decades, the same as it would inland. On a west or south-west wall facing the Firth, a flexible silicone render is often the better choice. It sheds water, resists the algae that damp sea air encourages, and copes with movement without cracking.
It is common in Ayr to finish the exposed elevation in a more robust system than the rest of the house. We will tell you at the site visit whether that is worth doing on yours.
Where the existing render is still well bonded and the damage is limited to cracks, a blown patch or the area around a window, a render repair matched to the existing finish is usually the sensible option. On coastal property it is often only the west or south-west elevation that needs attention, so we can renew that wall on its own and leave the sheltered sides alone.
Where the render has lost its bond across a whole elevation, or water is already getting behind it, patching only buys time. In that case the right answer is to strip it back and re-render with a specification suited to the exposure. We will sound the wall and tell you honestly which one your property needs.
We work across the whole town and the KA1, KA2 and KA3 postcodes, including Bellfield, Shortlees, Onthank, Knockinlaw, Longpark, Altonhill, New Farm Loch, Southcraigs, Grange, Annanhill, Bonnyton, Riccarton and the town centre.
We also cover the villages around the town: Hurlford, Crookedholm, Kilmaurs, Crosshouse, Knockentiber, Fenwick, Stewarton and Dundonald, and east along the A71 into the Irvine Valley.

Every quote follows a free site visit, because the price depends on the wall in front of us. The main things that move it are:
Specifying for coastal exposure can add to the cost of the affected elevation, but it is what stops the same wall failing again. We do not charge extra to come to Ayr. Our pricing is the same across all the areas we cover.

Not as long as it would inland, unless it is specified for the exposure. Driving rain, salt and constant wetting all shorten the life of a finish that would last decades in a sheltered spot. Specifying properly for the elevation makes a substantial difference.
Almost always exposure. West and south-west facing elevations take the driving rain off the Firth while the sheltered sides stay comparatively dry. It is completely normal for one elevation to fail while the others are sound.
A sound, properly specified render helps resist wind-driven rain getting into the wall. It will not solve damp caused by a leaking gutter, a failed flashing, a cracked sill or ground levels above the damp course. Those need fixing first, and we will tell you if that is what is going on before quoting for any render work.
In most cases yes, though a repair on a weathered wall will not be invisible. On coastal property where one elevation has failed, it is worth discussing whether to do that elevation in a more robust finish and not simply match what failed.
It depends on the size of the house, the exposure, whether the old finish has to come off, and the finish you choose. We give a written quote after a free site visit, so you know the figure before deciding anything.
Yes, but not in frost, heavy rain or strong onshore wind. In the colder months we schedule around the forecast and protect fresh work, so start dates are a little more flexible than in summer.
